Head Literacy Tutor

Job Description: 

The Down Syndrome Association of Connecticut seeks a part-time (20-25 hours weekly) Head Literacy Tutor to support the academic operations and services for the Literacy & Education Center (LEC). The LEC is an after school literacy program that serves children and adults with Down syndrome in a 1:1 or small group setting. The part-time Head Literacy Tutor will support the LEC in the following ways: 

Direct Services 

  • Provide 10 hours of 1:1 tutoring in-person and online to students with intellectual disabilities. 
  • Create individualized lesson plans based on evidence-based practices with a focus on foundational reading and writing skills. Prep time is provided 
  • Maintain and update student records and data related to literacy 

Coordination & Communication 

  • Establish regular tutor meetings to assist as needed 
  • Determine the Teacher Assistant schedule 
  • Communicate with related service providers as needed 
  • Follow the LEC Semester Calendar and communicate with parents and tutors regarding semester transitions, application dates/deadlines, and progress reports

Program Development

  • Add onto the framework for LEC materials based on the scope & sequence of the program during tutoring semesters and semester transitions 
  • Support the Program Coordinator in developing and determining materials for the program. 
  • Provide professional development opportunities to the Teacher Assistant 

Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in education. Special Education preferred
  • Active Educator Certification (165: Special Education K-12 Certification) 
  • Background in teaching phonics to students with disabilities 
  • Preferred training/certifications: Wilson Reading System Level 1 or Level 2 Certification, Orton-Gillingham training and certification (Level A or B)

  • Location: CT residency is preferred. MA, NY, & RI residents may be considered. The candidate must be within driving distance to our center’s physical location.
