Literacy Program Coordinator

Job Description: 

The Down Syndrome Association of Connecticut seeks a full-time Literacy Program Coordinator to support all aspects of the academic operations for the Literacy & Education Center (LEC). The LEC is an after school literacy program that serves children and adults with Down syndrome in a 1:1 or small group setting. The full-time Literacy Program Coordinator will support the LEC in the following ways: 

Direct Services 

  • Provide 8-16 hours of 1:1 tutoring in-person and online (dependent on client needs) to students with intellectual disabilities
  • Create individualized lesson plans based on evidence-based practices with a focus on foundational reading and writing skills. Prep time is provided
  • Maintain and update student records and data related to literacy 

Coordination & Communication 

  • Network and connect with new, previous, and current families  
  • Facilitate school district agreements for services 
  • Determine tutor expertise and their availability 
  • Collaborate with Operations Coordinator to set up tutor schedules and policies/procedures updates  
  • Assist with onboarding and hiring new tutors
  • Determine the Teacher Assistant schedule 
  • Organize student folders and distribute them across tutors 
  • Data and lesson plan oversight across tutors 
  • Communicate with related service providers as needed 
  • Develop & follow the LEC Semester Calendar and communicate with parents and tutors regarding semester transitions, application dates/deadlines, and progress reports
  • Coordinate volunteer and field study opportunities on an as-needed basis 

Program Development 

  • Oversight and development of LEC materials 
  • Contact person for materials needed for programming. Develop and draft a budget with the Executive Director 
  • Update the employee portal for communication and learning material needs 
  • Provide LEC Membership updates to the Operations Coordinator as needed 
  • Collaborate with the Operations Coordinator to maintain and build the progress-monitoring database 
  • Update the existing program and help expand programming services 
  • Provide professional development opportunities to the Teacher Assistant 
  • Determine professional development needs for educators and/or parents. Communicate with Research & Training Coordinator

Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in education. Special Education preferred. 
  • Active Educator Certification (165: Special Education K-12 Certification) 
  • Background in teaching phonics to students with disabilities 
  • Preferred training/certifications: Wilson Reading System Level 1 or Level 2 Certification, Orton-Gillingham training and certification (Level A or B)

Salary

  • $40,000 – 50,000 per year
