Job Description
Our after-school tutoring program seeks talented, experienced literacy tutors with a strong background in teaching foundational literacy skills (minimum of 1 hour per week). We help students with Down syndrome, or related disabilities, reach their full potential by developing and implementing a systematic approach to learning. We provide direct one-to-one, phonics-based instruction both online and in-person. We match tutor skills and availability to student needs and availability. The Literacy Tutor will support the LEC in the following ways:
Direct Services
- Provide 1:1 tutoring in-person and/or online to students with intellectual disabilities.
- Create individualized lesson plans based on evidence-based practices with a focus on foundational reading and writing skills. Prep time is provided
- Maintain and update student records and data related to literacy
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in education. Special Education preferred
- Active Educator Certification (165: Special Education K-12 Certification)
- Background in teaching phonics to students with disabilities
- Preferred training/certifications: Wilson Reading System Level 1 or Level 2 Certification, Orton-Gillingham training and certification (Level A or B)

- Location: CT residency is preferred. MA, NY, & RI residents may be considered. The candidate must be within driving distance to our center’s physical location.

- Develop your own schedule based on your availability! Tutoring schedules remain consistent for 3-4 months. There are 4 sessions over the year that give tutors a chance to change their schedule, if desired.
