Down Syndrome Awareness

We "raise awareness" to combat stereotypes.

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring genetic disorder, but because of our community's history of institutionalization and seclusion, many people have never met an individual with Down syndrome. We are more alike than different, but they may not know that.

Individuals with Down syndrome can live independently and contribute to their communities using their gifts and talents when given the opportunity, and opportunity begins with awareness.

Current DS ACT Education and Outreach Projects and Resources

The DS ACT Education and Outreach Committee has several projects that go on throughout the year including our Book Donation program, the World Down Syndrome Day toolkit and resources, webinars, community meet ups and many more.

If you are interested in becoming part of this committee or would like to find out more about what they do, contact awareness@mydsact.org

Book Donation Program

Each year, DS ACT donates books about Down syndrome to schools, libraries, and community centers. Recipient sites are nominated each fall and books are distributed in March.

Since 2019, the DS ACT has made a profound impact by donating over 727 books to more than 218 schools, public libraries, and institutions across Connecticut, empowering communities with knowledge and fostering a culture of literacy and learning. Through these efforts, the organization has also raised vital awareness about Down syndrome, promoting inclusion, understanding, and acceptance in communities throughout the state.
