Prenatal Testing

There are two types of prenatal testing available for Down Syndrome: screening tests and diagnostic tests.  Only a diagnostic test will tell you for sure if your baby has Down syndrome.

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation and the National Down Syndrome Congress have created a pamphlet that explains the different kinds of tests and some of the things you should know about them.  They are available in English and in Spanish:

Prenatal Testing — English

Prenatal Testing — Spanish

Talking with a genetic counselor can help you understand the test results.  Our First Call program coordinator can answer questions, connect you to Connecticut families who have experienced a prenatal diagnosis and help you find additional medical resources.  Contact First Call by email at firstcall@mydsact.org or by phone at 888-486-8537.
